Balangay: A Modern Dining Table Inspired by Filipino Craftsmanship

A Unique Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Inspired by the first wooden watercraft excavated in Southeast Asia, the Balangay dining table is a testament to early Filipino craftsmanship. Designed by Jesy Christopher V. Cruz, this table combines lines and curves, symmetry and light textures to create a crisp, sharp, and spare look. With its functional design and use of reclaimed wood and glass, the Balangay table is not only visually stunning but also sustainable.

The Balangay dining table stands out from other designs with its unique blend of tradition and modernity. The use of reclaimed wood, a popular material in the Philippines, gives the table a distinct appearance, durability, and history. Sustainability is at the forefront of this design, as the construction process minimizes energy consumption and ensures that 100% of waste is recoverable. With a low carbon footprint, the Balangay table is a conscious choice for eco-conscious individuals.

Constructed using traditional tools and methods employed by local master boat building tribes, the Balangay table pays homage to Filipino craftsmanship. Every piece is made by hand, showcasing the skill and dedication of local artisans. The table's design also represents the three major regions of the Philippines, with glass, wood, and steel coming together harmoniously.

Measuring 210W x 100D x 72H CM, the Balangay dining table features a 12MM tempered glass top that adds a touch of modernity to the design. The table's simplicity allows it to seamlessly blend into any interior, while its storage or display area below the glass provides a versatile space to create different moods depending on the objects showcased.

The concept for the Balangay table was born in 2015, and prototyping began in January 2018, lasting until September of the same year. The design and production took place in Pampanga, Philippines, where local artisans meticulously crafted each piece. The table is a true labor of love, reflecting the dedication and hard work of the design team.

Recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity, the Balangay dining table was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that authentically embody experience and resourcefulness. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, the Balangay table contributes to quality of life improvements, making it a valuable addition to any home.

The Balangay dining table is more than just a piece of furniture; it represents Filipino cultural modernity, bridging the gap between the past and the future. With its sustainable materials and traditional craftsmanship, this table embodies togetherness and serves as a functional centerpiece for families, making it an essential addition to any Filipino home.
