Ilumel: A Timeless Architectural Masterpiece

Dante Luna G.'s Award-Winning Design Transforms Santo Domingo's Cityscape

Ilumel, a flagship store in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is a testament to the transformative power of architecture. Designed by Dante Luna G. and his team, the store's unique facade and interior design have earned it the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2019.

The concept of Ilumel was born out of the need to unify four buildings in the heart of Santo Domingo. The designers achieved this by applying a translucent skin to the buildings, creating a light presence that illuminates the city at night. The facade, made of die-cut custom anodized aluminum panels, is supported by a metal structure designed to give a floating effect and allow a large flow on the ground floor.

Ilumel stands out for its timeless architecture. The designers used noble materials to create a design that wouldn't go out of style. The building's skin is made of perforated anodized aluminum plates, a material manufactured in Colombia. Some elements have a metallic appearance, achieved through the use of a decorative cement from Cement Design's Metallic Collection.

The store, which spans over 18,000 square meters, is technologically updated and well-lit, thanks to the integration of natural and artificial light. The first floor is dedicated to decorations and decoration accessories, with galleries arranged to exhibit exclusive lines. Other areas are designed for special events, missile launchers, and art exhibitions. The store also features a small cafe and outdoor green areas that soften the site and integrate it with the avenue.

The project was not without its challenges. The designers had to respect the proportions and various elements of the original buildings, which were architectural icons for the city. They also had to ensure that the large scale of the project didn't result in a very massive element. Despite these challenges, they were able to maintain the silhouette of the original design.

Ilumel is more than just a store. It's a testament to the power of design and architecture in transforming a city's landscape. The project, which began in 2007 and was completed in 2018, has set a new standard for future developments in the city. The store's success is a testament to Dante Luna G.'s vision and the hard work of his team, which includes architects Sarah Tio, Wilmeer De Los Santos, Nicolás S. Naranjo, and José Luis A. Rojas.
