Boundless View: A Dialogue Between Light and Space

Shih Hsien Yuan's Award-Winning Residential Design

Shih Hsien Yuan's "Boundless View" is a residential design project that beautifully captures the dialogue between light and space. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, breaks territorial boundaries and allows for pure immersion in living space.

The inspiration for "Boundless View" comes from the beauty of window views, which the designer likens to paintings. The design uses vertical partitioning extensions and a basic black and gray tone to create a quiet pace that reconciles external noise. The black wood grain and gray marble extension naturally usher users into the living room. The horizontal effect of the stone veers into the main wall of the living room, giving coherence to the overall space and enhancing overall flow.

What sets "Boundless View" apart is the designer's ability to convey the dialogue between light and space, and the connection between natural landscape and space. The large window in the living room draws sunlight, river, and mountain scenery into the picture, while the wide balcony allows users to enjoy the view outside the windows. The wood grain adds sentiments and harmonizes overall emotion while the stone manifests rationality and enhances spatial quality. By splicing the two textures, visual contrast is created to distinguish flow and living space.

The design was realized in Taipei, starting in January 2018 and finishing in July of the same year. The room type size is 56 sq ft and includes a living room, kitchen, dining room, three bathrooms, and two rooms. The basic materials used are mirror, glass, stone, wood skin, brick, and iron parts. The design tags associated with the project are modern, simple, relax, and memories.

The design's interaction is another unique feature. The mild wood quality and stone wall continue into the dining area, with the wall surface reaching into the black mirror frame on the ceiling to differentiate the living room from the dining area. The mirrored surface of the round table reflects the lights above, like the surface of still water reflecting the clouds in the sky. This image is enhanced by paintings of plants on the wall appearing to converse with distant mountains to express an ambiance of warmth in the flow of the dining space.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was how to echo the outdoors and indoors. The designer had to maintain a wide field of vision while ensuring privacy. This was achieved by using representative materials of nature: wood and stone as the main building materials, to achieve a true outdoor and indoor integrity of the whole.

In conclusion, Shih Hsien Yuan's "Boundless View" is a testament to the power of design in enhancing the quality of residential living spaces. It's a design that not only won the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019 but also set a high standard for future residential design projects.
