Li-Ling Chang's Pile: A Poetic Blend of Architecture and Nature

Winner of the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019

Li-Ling Chang's architectural masterpiece, Pile, is a unique blend of design and nature, inspired by the tranquility of flowing water, the whisper of pines, and the melody of birds. This public space, located in Taichung City, Taiwan, is a testament to Chang's innovative approach to design, offering a serene escape within the urban landscape.

The design of Pile is a harmonious juxtaposition of contrasts - near and far, clear and fuzzy, flowing and solid, light and heavy. These contrasts create a powerful balance in the space, with scenes superimposed between the physical and the virtual. The space, covering an area of 2317 square meters, is like translucent papers stacked one on top of each other, appearing flat but forming a deep space.

The unique properties of Pile lie in its ability to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The semi-indoor space unlocks the barrier of the wall, transforming the outdoor wall into a visual subject. The wall here is separated from its practical role, breaking the boundary between walls and making half of the outdoor space the extension of the indoors. This innovative approach to design challenges traditional architectural norms and offers a fresh perspective on space utilization.

The realization of Pile's design involved the use of brown dark limestone, silver dragon stone, and Norwegian black diamond. Several holes were intentionally drilled on this heavy-dense wall to create a framed view from the entrance to the opposite side. The linear beam is also an epitome that implies the flow of time, adding another layer of depth to the space.

Chang's design philosophy is deeply rooted in the harmonization of human sensations and nature. The urbanization of society has intensified the population density, forcing architectural and interior design to fight for the size of lands. Through Pile, Chang has managed to create a tranquil landscape within the city, reminding people of nature's existence and the expression of time and space emotions.

Li-Ling Chang's Pile is a testament to the power of design and its ability to transform spaces. It is a reminder that architecture is not just about buildings and structures, but also about creating spaces that evoke emotions and provide a sense of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of city life. This design has rightfully earned Chang the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, a testament to her outstanding expertise and innovation in the field of design.
