Peodour: A Cultural Reflection Through Ceramic Design

Jing Kang's Award-Winning Ceramic Cushions Inspired by Ancient Chinese Seating Culture

Peodour, a unique ceramic design by Jing Kang, draws inspiration from the ancient Chinese culture of floor seating. This innovative design invites people to rethink their relationship with their surroundings, offering a fresh perspective on public spaces.

Peodour is not just a design; it's a cultural statement. Jing Kang's inspiration stemmed from the traditional Chinese practice of sitting on the floor. This practice was prevalent until the Western Jin Dynasty when the introduction of 'Hu Chuang' furniture shifted the seating culture to a higher vantage point. Peodour is a call to return to this lower seating position, encouraging people to engage with their surroundings in a new way.

The unique properties of Peodour lie in its form and function. These ceramic cushions, each featuring a concave shape reminiscent of a seated human figure, invite people to sit and interact. The design can be integrated into public areas or gardens, fostering a sense of community. One of the shapes is even designed to match with stairs, enhancing its versatility.

Peodour is a testament to the beauty of handcrafted ceramics. Each piece is meticulously shaped using different molds and fired at 1320°C in a gas kiln. The choice of ceramic as a material is a nod to the Chinese tradition of ceramic stools and tables in gardens. The clear, special glaze of the ceramic pieces adds to their aesthetic appeal.

The design comes in two sizes: the smaller one measures approximately 350mm x 350mm x 100mm, and the larger one is about 500mm x 180mm x 430mm. The larger design poses a unique challenge as it requires hand pressing with molds and includes internal structures. Despite these challenges, the result is a set of beautifully crafted ceramic cushions that not only serve a functional purpose but also tell a cultural story.

Peodour has been showcased at various exhibitions, including the MA designer maker final show at Camberwell College of Arts, London in 2015, and the UNICOGGETTO No.1 in Milano, Italy in 2017. The design has also been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2019, a testament to its innovative design and cultural significance.

In conclusion, Peodour by Jing Kang is more than a ceramic design; it's a reflection of cultural history and a call to engage with our surroundings in a new way. Its unique design, cultural inspiration, and handcrafted execution make it a noteworthy addition to the world of design and art.
