Kaiseki MEE: A Japanese Restaurant in Shanghai

An Exquisite Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

This Japanese-style restaurant, Kaiseki MEE, located in the Shanghai East Bund, offers a unique dining experience that combines traditional Kaiseki-Ryori cuisine with contemporary design. Designed by Jun Murata, this restaurant beautifully blends elements of Japanese aesthetics with the industrial charm of the renovated shipyard it occupies.

The entrance of Kaiseki MEE sets the tone for the entire dining experience. As guests step inside, they are greeted by a central stone garden, meticulously designed to create a sense of tranquility. The garden features white and black cobblestones and basins, separated by 15 mm thick steel plates, creating a three-dimensional space that overlaps with the surrounding areas.

One of the remarkable aspects of Kaiseki MEE is its integration with the existing architecture of the shipyard, which was renovated by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The arrangement of windows allows guests to appreciate the retro texture of the brick structure and the grand scale of the framework from within the restaurant.

The three private rooms in Kaiseki MEE offer a truly immersive experience. Each room is independent and comes with its own water and plant garden, creating a serene atmosphere that complements the dining experience. The inner entrance, located under the escalator, features black monoliths laid on white bead gravel, while the external entrance on the river side boasts a double rectangular garden that connects seamlessly with the interior.

The interior design of Kaiseki MEE is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail. Furnishings, arts, and antique furniture procured from Japan add a touch of color to the quiet interior. Solid oak tables and chairs create an imposing atmosphere, while matte black plaster and diatom walls softly diffuse indirect light, creating a warm and inviting dining space. The overall design aims to evoke a sense of Japanese aesthetic and provide guests with a rich and immersive dining experience.

Jun Murata, the designer behind Kaiseki MEE, explains, "I hope the guests enjoy the time of dense food while touching Japanese aesthetic sense." The restaurant's unique design, with its fusion of geometric design methods and organic elements such as rocks, water ponds, and plants, creates a silent beauty that captivates guests. The carefully curated antique paintings, furniture, and tableware sourced from Japan add a seasonal touch, delighting the eyes of the guests.

Kaiseki MEE is not just a restaurant; it is an experience that transports guests to the heart of Japan. The design of this exceptional dining establishment has earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. Jun Murata's creation showcases the best of Japanese aesthetics and design, making Kaiseki MEE a must-visit destination for those seeking a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
