Intersections: An Existential Artwork and Japanese Table

A Unique Blend of Minimalism and Functionality

Designed by Francesco Cappuccio

Francesco Cappuccio's "Intersections" is a captivating design that seamlessly combines art and functionality. Drawing inspiration from minimalism and existentialism, this design stands out as a harmonious blend of form and purpose.

The centerpiece of "Intersections" is a black aluminum structure, intersected by six cross rows. Symbolizing harmony in the void, these crosses represent the belief that six is the only number considered harmonious with all others. The orthogonal table framing, coated with the world's blackest black paint, represents the irrational fear of the unknown or mysterious.

What sets "Intersections" apart is its versatility. It serves as both an existential minimalist artwork and a Japanese table. The aluminum body, coated with Black 3.0, creates the illusion of white crosses floating in the void. This design is not only visually striking but also functional, with a width and depth of 1200 mm, making it a spacious table that can comfortably seat ten people.

The lightweight nature of "Intersections" adds to its appeal. Like a canvas, it can be easily shifted between being an artwork and a functional table. Despite its lightness, it remains sturdy and can be handled by a single person, weighing under 10 kg.

Francesco Cappuccio faced several challenges in bringing this design to life. The structural elements had to be functional for both the artwork and the table, while also reducing the real and visual weight. The use of Black 3.0 coating helped achieve this goal, resulting in a design that is visually captivating yet practical.

Designed in December 2018, "Intersections" is a testament to the timeless appeal of minimalist art. It draws inspiration from the black and white geometric patterns of 1960s minimalism, infusing it with a touch of existentialism. This unique blend of influences gives "Intersections" a distinct character that is sure to captivate art and design enthusiasts.

Recognizing its excellence, "Intersections" was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, showcasing innovation, practicality, and exceptional craftsmanship.
