Same But Different: Exploring the Tangible Smell

Unveiling the Invisible and Making it Visible

The complexity of the human senses is impressive. If you are interested in the topic, it will bring you to the research in the chemistry behind them, in this project specifically to smells.

The Same But Different project, created by designer Asya Demidova, takes a unique approach to the exploration of smells. By converting smell into a physical form and constructing visual interpretations, Demidova offers a new perspective on the intangible world of scents.

The project consists of two different approaches. The first approach focuses on providing a tangible experience of smell. Forms were created, each containing two relevant smells. To create a form, the molecular representation of the smells had to be placed together. The juxtaposition of smells in their molecular arrangements creates a contrast, resulting in a visually striking form.

In the second approach, still-life layouts were used to represent the smells' chemical arrangements. By using this method, Demidova creates a visual interpretation of the smells, allowing viewers to explore the intricate connections between chemistry and scent.

The realization of the Same But Different project involved advanced technology. The forms were 3D printed and coated with several holographic paint layers applied by an industrial airbrush. The shape and color of each form provide a hint about the duality of the smells preserved within.

Technical specifications of the design include 3D forms measuring around 12-15cm, printed with the maximum resolution of the printer. The inside of the forms contains internal chambers with absorbent materials, allowing for the preservation of the smells. Thin conduits connect the chambers to the exterior, enabling the diffusion of the smells.

Visitors to the Same But Different exhibition can interact with the sculptures by smelling and grabbing them from different angles. This hands-on experience adds a tactile element to the exploration of scents.

The Same But Different project was developed over a period of five months, starting in January 2017 in Moscow. It was exhibited in the "Reveal" show in June 2017, captivating audiences with its innovative approach to sensory experiences.

The underlying research for this project delves into the fascinating world of chemical substances. Demidova focused on unique pairs of compounds that have the same formula but different smells. By studying the variations in the arrangement of atoms, Demidova discovered this rare and intriguing phenomenon, which was confirmed through collaboration with experts in perfumery and chemistry.

The Same But Different project faced its fair share of challenges. The greatest hurdle was finding the balance between scientific accuracy and creating an accessible experience for the general public. Demidova successfully translated real phenomena into an engaging and visually captivating exhibition.

Recognized for its exceptional design, the Same But Different project was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the project's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The Same But Different project is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world through its fulfillment and positive impact.
