Parametric Ceramics: A Fusion of Traditional Craft and Modern Technology

Jimmy Jian's Award-Winning Design Explores the Boundaries of Ceramic Art

Parametric Ceramics, a unique pottery series by Jimmy Jian, combines the traditional craft of ceramics with the innovative technique of parametric design. This blend of old and new has resulted in a collection that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also pushes the boundaries of what is possible in ceramic design.

The term "parametric design" is typically used in architecture to describe a design method that uses an algorithmic model system. By adjusting parameters within this system, designers can generate a variety of forms in real-time, allowing for a dynamic and responsive design process. Jimmy Jian has applied this concept to the creation of ceramics, resulting in a series of objects that are both beautiful and unique.

Parametric Ceramics stands out due to its innovative use of parametric modeling and slip casting. These techniques enable the creation of pottery that is visually stunning, difficult to replicate by hand, yet still feasible for production. The series showcases the potential of combining traditional crafts with modern design tools, offering a fresh perspective on ceramic art.

The process of creating these ceramics involves a combination of algorithmic thinking and slip casting. The algorithm defines the parameters and rules that shape the design, while slip casting forms the physical object. The plaster mold used in slip casting absorbs water from the slurry, causing a deposit of material to form on the mold's inner wall. The thickness of this "skin" is proportional to the time allowed for it to form, providing another layer of control over the final product's appearance.

The Parametric Ceramics project began in June 2017 in Taipei and was completed in May 2018. Throughout this period, the team aimed to push the boundaries of ceramic design by integrating contemporary technologies. The project faced challenges in exploring forms that fit the original slip casting process, were difficult to craft by hand, but still maintained a rich parametric aesthetic.

The project's success is evident in its recognition by the prestigious A' Design Award, where it was awarded Silver in the Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric, and AI-Assisted Design category in 2019. This award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, highlighting the remarkable level of excellence achieved by the Parametric Ceramics series.

In conclusion, Parametric Ceramics represents a significant advancement in ceramic design, demonstrating the potential of combining traditional craft techniques with modern design tools. The series showcases the beauty of ceramics while pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the field, offering a fresh and exciting perspective on the art of pottery.
