The project's uniqueness lies in its sophisticated forms and monochrome scheme. The design strategy was to create a simple form yet contain subtle details. The axial diagram of the space was set by three features, using minimal walls to set boundaries between public and private spaces. Existing beams were used to blur boundaries between the living, dining, and kitchen areas. A tailored carbon black bookcase served as a zone divider, reflecting the pleating and stripes inspiration from Thom Browne. These strategies and the monochrome color scheme allowed for defining each zone without losing the space's cohesiveness.
The design was realized using materials such as ceramic tile, oak wood, engineered hardwood flooring, and metal. The project aimed to create openness with blurred boundaries between private and public zones. Minimalizing walls and placing fixed installations along the wall kept flexibility in the center, creating a cohesive and well-circulated flow in the space.
The project, which started in June 2018 and finished in August 2018, was located in Taipei, Taiwan. The design research focused on maximizing a small space by introducing minimal architectural walls and using fixed installations as space or zone dividers. The orientation and scale of each zone were determined by studying and analyzing the client’s life habits to meet their needs. The space was designed to represent the client’s lifestyle and aesthetic view.
The main challenge was to maximize the small house with more possibilities. Defining spaces or zones without setting up clear or solid boundaries was a key design objective. Under the monochrome color scheme, creating warmth and visual texture was another challenge. The design solution was to focus on how the house reflects the client’s interests. The space was sculptured with a sleek form and sophisticated tone, embodying the subtle handle of pleating details and line proportions inspired by Thom Browne.
