The inspiration for the Shuga Store came from the space itself. As an Italian firm, Savorelli and Bernabei had the sensibility to preserve and restore the original genius loci of the building. The result is a mixture of a sacred space and a new modern one, creating a unique ambiance that sets the store apart.
The design of the store revolves around the idea of showcasing the original structure of the building. The space has been cleaned up to reveal the old structure, while new materials such as steel, glass, and mirrors have been introduced to give it a contemporary touch. The two floors of the store are carefully organized, with women's merchandise on the ground floor and men's merchandise on the first floor.
One of the standout features of the Shuga Store is the introduction of shop windows in the interiors. These windows allow for a continuous change in atmosphere as customers journey through the store. The use of glass and mirrors further enhances this effect, creating a dynamic and immersive shopping experience.
The Shuga Store is more than just a retail space; it is a journey through feelings, atmosphere, and sensations. The carefully designed layout, clear circulation, and thoughtful lighting contribute to the overall experience. The store invites customers to explore and discover the merchandise in a space that seamlessly blends the old and the new.
The Shuga Store project started in 2016 and was completed in 2017. It is a permanent store located in Locarno, Switzerland. Throughout the design process, Savorelli and Bernabei conducted extensive research to understand how to preserve and renovate the valuable building. The project was developed with a focus on showcasing the merchandise and creating a harmonious coexistence between the old and the new.
The Shuga Store design has received recognition for its creativity and ingenuity. In 2019, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
