Rongqiao Kindergarten: A Wonderland of Learning and Fun

MAS inc. Transforms Old Building into a Vibrant Pre-school Education Center

The design concept for Rongqiao Kindergarten was inspired by the fleeting beauty of rainbows and bubbles. The theme of "FUN" was integrated into the design, showcasing the beauty of nature and adding an element of excitement to the space. The kindergarten is a large-scale project with an indoor area of 3,300 square meters, including an early education activity room and daycare room, and an outdoor garden of 3,000 square meters.

MAS inc. faced the challenge of remodeling an old building while keeping the budget in check and creating a space suitable for children. The original three-floor corridor atrium was transformed into an outer ring corridor, with classrooms on the first and second floors surrounding the new atrium. The space of the original third-floor corridor around the atrium was retained, and a curved bridge with a span of 8 meters on the second floor was cleverly used to unify the space. This not only met circulation and fire evacuation requirements but also maximized the space into a multi-functional interactive area with natural lighting for children to explore, read, and listen to stories.

Key to the design was the use of E0 class ecological materials, fire rating B1 or above, and high-quality structural remodeling. The design team also considered easy procurement and transportation, as well as reasonable budget control. The interior design area is 3042m2, with specific floor and ceiling heights for each level. The atrium at the second floor has a diameter of 9M, at the third floor is 5.4M, and the atrium height is 15.8 meters.

Humanized design, safety design, and inspiring design were the three main aspects considered in the interior design. Child ergonomics, psychological care, body protection, health and epidemic prevention, safe evacuation, color psychology, and children's behavioral psychology were all taken into account. The design actively conveys the core spirit of MAS: "environment is education".

With the project completed in June 2018 and opened in September 2018, the Rongqiao Kindergarten stands as a testament to the innovative and creative prowess of MAS inc. The design team, led by Alex Jiang (Design Director), Tony Zhang (Designer), Yiqian Xie (Designer), and Ellie Wu (Designer), has successfully created a space that not only meets the functional needs of a pre-school education center but also inspires and stimulates the imagination and creativity of the children who use it.
