VeloClass: A Revolutionary Bicycle Traffic Measurement System

Maform Design's VeloClass: Shaping the Future of Bicycle Infrastructure

As municipalities worldwide recognize the potential of bicycle traffic and tourism, the need for precise data on these routes is becoming increasingly important. Enter VeloClass, a robust solution by Maform Design, that precisely measures traffic on bicycle roads, providing valuable insights for infrastructure development and private investments.

Maform Design has created VeloClass, a vehicle-sensitive and direction-aware measurement device for measuring traffic on bicycle roads. This innovative system not only counts the number of vehicles passing but also identifies the type of vehicles and their direction. The data provided by VeloClass is invaluable for municipalities looking to invest in bicycle infrastructure, as it offers insights into which routes are most used and which properties are valuable for opening cyclist-friendly amenities such as restaurants or resting places.

The unique properties of VeloClass set it apart from other bicycle counting solutions. The device is designed to withstand weather conditions in continental Europe and other environmental factors for 10 years without maintenance. The installation process is quick and does not require any tampering with the road. The kiosks housing the electrical components are designed to be visually appealing, further enhancing the innovative solution.

The technology behind VeloClass includes an ultrasonic beamer and receiver, a local battery charged by a solar panel, a long-lasting, lower performance on-board computer, and 3G communication for data transmission. The device is encased in a steel tube structure that protects the technological components and makes the structure more visible to bikers. The technological parts are held by a cost-effective sheet metal structure, and the exterior is made of rapid injection molded parts, providing a unique and flexible shape.

Alongside the product, Maform Design also created the complete branding and the user interface of the web app. The online cloud-based service allows users to review traffic data easily. Public data can be accessed on VeloClass's website, where users can click on the station they are interested in and review historical data in graph-view.

The project, which started in January 2018 in Budapest, took only six months to install the device in the first location. Currently, 19 stations are installed across Hungary. The project was initiated with Maform Design's own Challenge Mapping Workshop method, which translated the high-level goals of the client into project goals. The team also gathered inspiration from the bicycle subculture, using methods like moodboarding, competitor mapping, and conducting classic desktop research.

The VeloClass project faced several challenges, the hardest of which was creating an object that is robust, low-tech, and cost-effective, while also becoming an iconic piece of street furniture that is pleasant to look at near bike roads. Despite these challenges, the project was a success and was awarded the Golden A' Meta, Strategic and Service Design Award in 2019, a testament to the innovation and impact of VeloClass.
