Blending Modern Functionality with Ancient Scenery in a Unique Architectural Design

Discover how Nolan Chao, an innovative designer, breathes new life into an ancient quadrangle in Beijing, creating a unique blend of modern functionality and historic charm. His design, "Quad", won the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020.

Nolan Chao's design, "Quad", is a testament to his ability to seamlessly blend modern design elements with the historic charm of Beijing's ancient quadrangle area. Inspired by the architectural space and the words "Quad", which signify centrality and privacy, Chao has created a design that is low-key, comfortable, and fabulous.

The uniqueness of the "Quad" lies in its advanced and invisible design conception and construction method. It recalls the attractive moment of the ancient quadrangle in the center of Beijing, a hundred years ago. The original building was dangerous, increasing the difficulty of reinforcing and rebuilding without leaving any trace. Balancing the style of the bar with the privacy and the whole historical neighborhood was a challenge that Chao successfully overcame.

The "Quad" was realized using woods for decoration and concrete for the facade. The light, measuring 28cm*175cm, was sourced from Oluce, Superluna397. The project started in April 2018 in Beijing, China, and was completed in November of the same year.

Chao's design was not without challenges. He had to balance the traditional symbolic image with the modern use function. The project, located in the central city, presented different elements with conflict about new and old existing. It was designed beyond the traditional and also absorbing the new things. This resulted in a new space, experience, opportunities, and imaginations.

Chao's "Quad" design has been recognized for its innovative approach to blending modern functionality with ancient scenery. It was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.

In conclusion, Nolan Chao's "Quad" design is a perfect example of how modern design can be seamlessly integrated into historic architecture. His innovative approach to design and construction has resulted in a unique blend of modern functionality and historic charm, earning him recognition in the design world.
