Pet Treats: A Studio Close to Nature

Restoring the Soul of an Old House

The concept of this project is to provide a place that is close to nature, here is the pet treats studio. You can create your own pet biscuit here and let the pets interact. There is no boundary between indoors and outdoors, and the activity space is connected to nature.

This is an old house built in the 1960s with a construction area of only 80 square meters. The roof has collapsed, and the walls are mottled with waste and plants scattered throughout. The old house has become a ruin. However, designer Jen-Chuan Chang saw the potential to restore the soul of this old house and transform it into a viable place.

The Pet Treats studio stands out with its unique approach to design and its connection to nature. The focus of the project was to create a space that seamlessly integrates the indoors with the outdoors. The design features an open wall, allowing fresh air to flow through the old house and creating a sense of freedom within the space.

The multi-functional area retains the original height of the building, providing a comfortable and spacious environment. Oversized glass windows introduce natural light, optimizing the lighting and ventilation of the entire space. The seat design resembles grass, and the use of blankets combined with cushions creates a cozy and natural atmosphere. The interior is vibrant, with the landscape blending seamlessly into the space, making it brighter and softer.

Deliberately preserving the old building materials, such as the bricks, serves as a testament to the history of the old house. These preserved old bricks are rebuilt into courtyard walls, showcasing the owner's deep connection and appreciation for the old house.

The Pet Treats studio was realized using recycled bricks and stones, white painted iron, glass, epoxy, black iron, and self-leveling cement. The design specifications include a total area of 80 square meters, with a one-floor studio featuring a work area, multi-purpose area, and lounge.

The project, which started in February 2018 and finished in December 2018, is located in Taiwan. The design team conducted extensive research to address the challenges posed by the old house's condition. They focused on utilizing the courtyard to achieve lighting and ventilation needs, as well as implementing waterproof coatings to combat the high humidity in Taiwan.

The Pet Treats studio received the Iron A' Design Award in 2020 for its exceptional interior space, retail, and exhibition design. This award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The studio's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world.

With its unique design and commitment to restoring the soul of an old house, the Pet Treats studio offers a one-of-a-kind experience for pet owners and their furry friends. It serves as a testament to the power of design to transform spaces and create meaningful connections with nature.
