Open: Innovative Packaging Sleeves by Koen van Rijen

Uniquely Designed Sleeves for Photography Magazines

Open is a project by renowned designer Koen van Rijen that introduces custom-made packaging sleeves for photography magazines. These sleeves not only provide a stylish and functional way to store and display the magazines but also embody the raw and intense emotions captured in the photographs. With its unique design and attention to detail, Open stands out as a remarkable innovation in the world of packaging.

The inspiration behind Open came from the raw and real human emotions depicted in the photography magazines. Koen van Rijen wanted to create a packaging design that reflected the contrast and minimalism seen in the photographs. To achieve this, natural cardboard with visible fibers was chosen, giving the sleeves a tactile and organic feel.

The sleeves themselves are made of thick, heavy anthracite cardboard, providing sturdiness and protection for the magazines. Each sleeve is embossed with screen-printed numbers ranging from 1 to 80, representing the number of subscribers. The attention to detail is evident in the personal touch added by the client, who stamped each box during the presentation, making every box unique.

One of the standout features of Open is the clever use of negative space. When the two sleeves are placed next to each other, a cut-away in both boxes reveals the letter "O," visually representing the title of the project. This design element adds an extra layer of intrigue and creativity to the packaging.

The interaction with Open is simple yet engaging. The sleeves are slid into each other, with a gap in the outer sleeve allowing for easy access to the inner sleeve. Sliding the inner sleeve out to the right reveals the word "open" when both sleeves are next to each other, further emphasizing the concept behind the design.

Open is a testament to the meticulous research and creative problem-solving undertaken by Koen van Rijen. Extensive research was conducted to find the perfect combination of materials that would complement the style of photography in the magazines. Additionally, multiple sample screen prints were made to determine the most suitable ink for the design.

Despite the creative and technical challenges faced, Open successfully combines natural materials, rich contrast, and sturdy construction. The result is a visually striking and functional packaging solution that enhances the overall experience of the photography magazines.

Open was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade that recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations. This award highlights the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.

With its unique design, attention to detail, and innovative approach, Open by Koen van Rijen sets a new standard in packaging sleeves for photography magazines. It not only showcases the magazines in an aesthetically pleasing way but also enhances the overall reading experience for photography enthusiasts.
