Revolutionizing Savings: The Last Sweet Money Bag

Lu Yu and Jiachun Zhou's innovative design redefines the traditional piggy bank

Lu Yu and Jiachun Zhou have transformed the traditional piggy bank into an engaging and emotionally resonant experience. Their design, named the Last Sweet, is a money bag that resembles a candy package. This innovative design not only satisfies the function of a piggy bank but also provides a new psychological feeling to the act of saving and retrieving money.

The Last Sweet was inspired by the outdated concept of piggy banks in the market. Lu Yu and Jiachun Zhou aimed to update the piggy bank's design while enhancing its emotional resonance. They changed the way coins are accessed, making the act of opening the bag and retrieving the coins akin to the joy of opening a candy package. This new approach to the money-taking behavior is intended to evoke a sweet feeling, similar to getting a candy.

What sets the Last Sweet apart from other piggy banks is its unique design and the psychological experience it provides. The money bag is designed to look like a candy package, giving it a sense of expectation and function. Once the bag is full and torn open, the joy of getting a complete coin is likened to the joy of getting candy. This design uses disposable materials, making the act of "carrying" and "taking" very contradictory. Once the seal is opened, the piggy bank loses its "rescue" effect, leaving only a sweet feeling.

The Last Sweet is made from hard kraft paper, an environmentally friendly material that keeps production costs low. The pattern is printed using ordinary color printing, and the ant line is suppressed using a machine. The triangular shape of the bag allows it to stand firmly on the table, and the red trapezoidal coin slot enhances the coin-operated operation, adding a sense of ritual to the act of saving money.

This design was created in Guangzhou in April 2019 and completed in May 2019. It was exhibited at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in June 2019. The design project involved extensive research on piggy banks, with the goal of reinterpreting the original concept. Through online big data research and interviews, Lu Yu and Jiachun Zhou found that consumers were seeking a higher emotional resonance with the product.

The Last Sweet was awarded Silver in A' Giftware Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
