GravitATE: A Revolution in Tableware Design

Yueyue Zhang's Award-Winning Design Enhances Dining Experience

Yueyue Zhang's inspiration for GravitATE came from observing the modern dining experience. As people become busier, they often eat alone and quickly, missing out on the social and mindful aspects of dining. Zhang's design aims to counteract this trend by creating a tableware set that encourages users to slow down, interact with others, and savor their food.

GravitATE is not just a tableware set; it's a dining experience. The set includes three personal dinnerware items and three service bowls, each with its own unique form and potential for movement. The design of each piece encourages users to interact with the tableware and with each other. For example, one bowl's shaking movement can prompt others to provide support, fostering a sense of community and shared experience at the dining table.

The creation of GravitATE involved a circular design process that utilized 3D-scanning and 3D-printing. Zhang began with a concept, then built a mock-up using clay or foam. This model was then scanned and digitally modeled, before being 3D-printed into a prototype for user testing. This process allowed Zhang to continually refine and improve the design based on user feedback and interaction.

GravitATE's unique properties and innovative design have not gone unnoticed. In 2020, the design was awarded the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award, which recognizes outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that demonstrate technical skill and contribute to quality of life improvements.
