Junheng Li, a visionary designer, has taken inspiration from this profound connection and reimagined The Classic of Tea, the world's earliest book recording tea. In a remarkable fusion of art, architecture, and design, Li has crafted a masterpiece that pays homage to ancient Chinese culture while embracing modern techniques and materials.
The Classic of Tea, redesigned by Junheng Li, is a testament to the enduring power of wood and copper. The entire book, from its pages to its packaging, is meticulously crafted from beech wood, evoking a sense of warmth and natural beauty. The central title is elegantly carved with red copper, adding a touch of sophistication and luxury.
Ancient Chinese culture, before Christ, was predominantly passed down through bamboo, trees, and bronze. Tea culture, too, evolved from these three materials. Li's design encapsulates this rich heritage, infusing it with contemporary aesthetics and functionality.
Using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, Li brings The Classic of Tea to life. The pages of the book are made of wood, allowing them to be taken out individually for closer examination. The intricate details are achieved through the use of a laser engraving machine, a delicate balance between precision and artistry.
The realization of this design was not without its challenges. Li meticulously experimented with various settings on the laser engraving machine to achieve the desired effect. The power, speed, and engraving material density had to be carefully calibrated to ensure a high-quality finished product. After more than 30 attempts, Li triumphed, creating a design that seamlessly blends tradition and innovation.
Production of The Classic of Tea began in 2017 and concluded in Beijing in 2018. The result is a design that captures the essence of tea culture, inviting us to embark on a journey of self-discovery and harmony with nature.
Junheng Li's remarkable design has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2020. This accolade celebrates designs that exemplify creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life. By redefining tradition with wood and copper, Li has created a design that not only honors the past but also inspires the future.
