Light Box: A Futuristic Residential Refurbishment

A Floating Cubic Unit Glowing in the Center of Space

The residential refurbishment project Light Box, designed by Kai-Shin Lo, is a conceptually rooted representation of light. This innovative design creates a floating cubic unit that serves as the centerpiece of the space, emitting a futuristic glow. With its functional gears and versatile layout, Light Box offers endless possibilities within its finite 76 square meters.

The inspiration for Light Box comes from the unique traits of the homeowner - an IT engineer, a bio-lover, and a faithful Christian. The design essence of a floating light perfectly aligns with the religious beliefs of the family. The color palette of blue, black, and shades of grey creates a futuristic tone that reflects the professional background of the owner.

The key feature of Light Box is its multifunctional room, which floats in the center of the space. This room is equipped with various mechanisms that allow it to transform into a workout room, a washitsu to accommodate guests, a guestroom, or even an extension of the living room. Ceiling-mounted durable hooks enable TRX training, while a floor-to-ceiling mirrored wall can be flipped down to reveal a standard double bed. The lifting washitsu table can comfortably host up to 8 people.

To achieve an airy, light-weighted, and sleek interior, Fun Space Interior Design utilized semi-open techniques and transparent materials. Customized wood frames were incorporated to elevate both the multifunctional room and the main bedroom. The hollowed-out bottom of the room allows for cable arrangement, maintaining a tidy appearance.

The Light Box project was completed in June 2017 in Taichung City, Taiwan. The design team, led by Chief Designer Kai-Shin Lo, faced several challenges during the project. The limited space posed a significant obstacle, but through precise calculation and execution, the team successfully created functional areas with sufficient height and no constraints. The multifunctional room presented another challenge due to its diverse usage possibilities. However, the design allows the room to seamlessly transition between public and private spaces, adapting to the needs of the moment.

Light Box received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills. Light Box stands out for its incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Light Box is a testament to the power of innovative design in maximizing space utilization and creating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. With its futuristic concept and versatile layout, this residential refurbishment sets a new standard for modern living.
