Starhub TVB Awards: A Celebration of TV Excellence

Unveiling the Extravagant Stage Design by Hui Chi Ho Howard

The Starhub TVB Awards, a prestigious event celebrating excellence in television, recently marked its 25th anniversary with a grand celebration at the iconic Singapore Marina Bay Sands – Sand Theatre. The event showcased the best of TVB programs and brought together more than 30 TVB artists and renowned singers. Adding to the allure of the evening was the stunning stage design by the talented Hui Chi Ho Howard.

Inspired by the captivating Gardens by the Bay, Hui Chi Ho Howard crafted a stage design that paid homage to the iconic supertrees that have become synonymous with Singapore's architectural marvels. These manmade structures, resembling something out of a sci-fi movie, feature concrete and steel frames adorned with over 200 species of plants, creating vertical gardens that are a sight to behold.

The challenge for Hui Chi Ho Howard was to recreate the essence of these supertrees within the confines of the stage area. With no hanging points available in front of the stage, the team had to devise a creative solution. They decided to separate the supertree-like structure into several pieces during the setup period. Tailor-made load suspending devices were used to hang each piece from the venue's rooftop, meticulously assembling them to create the overall sculpture.

One of the highlights of the stage design was the use of LED wall displays in different compositions. These vibrant displays added a dynamic element to the stage, enhancing the visual experience for the audience. Additionally, five sets of vertical LED displays were suspended using cyberhoist technology, allowing for fluid movements that synchronized seamlessly with the video graphics.

The Starhub TVB Awards stage design not only provided a visually stunning backdrop for the performances but also showcased the fusion of art, architecture, and technology. It served as a testament to the creativity and innovation of Hui Chi Ho Howard and his team.

As Hui Chi Ho Howard explained, "The idea behind the stage design was to create a visually captivating experience that pays homage to the iconic supertrees of Singapore. By incorporating LED displays and innovative suspension techniques, we aimed to elevate the overall atmosphere of the event and provide a memorable experience for the audience."

The Starhub TVB Awards stage design received widespread acclaim and was recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Event and Happening Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, practicality, and innovation, meeting professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
