The Art of Vandalism: Exhibition Branding by Davide Cocchis

Exploring the Boundaries of Street Art

Street art has long been a subject of controversy, blurring the lines between art and vandalism. Davide Cocchis, a renowned designer, tackles this provocative question through his exhibition branding project titled "The Art of Vandalism." By juxtaposing opposing styles, Cocchis challenges our perception of street art and invites us to question the boundaries of artistic expression.

The logo for "The Art of Vandalism" exhibition is a visual representation of the clash between the clean and legal environment of art galleries and the raw, rebellious nature of street art. The linear font used in the logo reflects the sophistication and orderliness of traditional art spaces, while the iconic "tag" style represents the street art movement. This deliberate contrast sparks a dialogue about the legitimacy of street art and challenges the notion of vandalism.

To reinforce the message, Cocchis incorporated a bold red spray touch in the logo. This addition not only adds a striking visual element but also symbolizes the rebellious and subversive nature of street art. The logo serves as a thought-provoking symbol, inviting viewers to question when street art crosses the line into vandalism and who gets to decide.

"The Art of Vandalism" exhibition showcased the works of various Italian street artists and took place in a bunker from the Second World War. The choice of venue adds another layer of meaning to the exhibition, highlighting the underground and often marginalized nature of street art. The event was hosted by the Segmenti Urbani cultural Association, further emphasizing the importance of street art as a cultural movement.

Cocchis utilized modern technology and design tools to bring his vision to life. The logo was created using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign, while the project management and brainstorming process involved Windows 10. The technical specifications of the logo include a minimum size of 15mm and a minimum margin of 10% to ensure optimal visibility and legibility.

The design process for "The Art of Vandalism" involved extensive research and collaboration. Cocchis conducted market research to understand the street art exhibition landscape and identify the need for a unique and impactful brand design. The brainstorming phase included close collaboration with the clients, resulting in the presentation of three brand suggestions. The project timeline spanned from May 4th to May 26th, 2019, reflecting the dedication and attention to detail invested in the design.

Davide Cocchis faced several challenges during the creation of the logo. The main obstacle was finding the perfect font for the word "vandalism?". It was crucial to strike a balance between effectively conveying the subversive character of street art and maintaining visual harmony within the design. Through meticulous exploration and experimentation, Cocchis overcame this challenge and achieved a visually compelling and thought-provoking logo.

"The Art of Vandalism" exhibition branding by Davide Cocchis has been recognized for its creativity and ingenuity. The project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020 in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that embody excellence, incorporating the best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Cocchis' work contributes to the improvement of quality of life and pushes the boundaries of artistic expression.
