Wishing Pavilion: A Sustainable Marvel in Architecture

Daydreamers Design's Award-Winning Pavilion Showcases Recycled Plastic Bricks

The Wishing Pavilion draws inspiration from the unique custom of the burning tower, a traditional architectural feature in Southern China. The design team has reimagined this concept into a contemporary architectural marvel, with a curved facade forming a double helix structure. This design creates the imagery of a rising dragon, reminiscent of the burning tower's signature architectural elements.

What sets the Wishing Pavilion apart is its construction material. Nearly five thousand pieces of recycled plastic bricks, made of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), were used to build the pavilion. HDPE is known for its high melting point and heat tolerance, making it an ideal material for such a structure. The use of recycled plastic bricks not only showcases the potential of sustainable materials in construction but also sends a powerful message about environmental responsibility.

The pavilion's design also incorporates LED lights programmed with lighting effects to enhance the festive atmosphere of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Visitors can appreciate the full moon through a skylight opening at the top of the structure. Inside the pavilion, a geometric fire lantern, created using traditional paper crafting techniques from China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage, provides a focal point for visitors' prayers and wishes.

The Wishing Pavilion was constructed within a challenging thirteen-day on-site construction period. The design was standardized into a modular system, divided into fifty-six components, and pre-fabrication processes were utilized to complete all production procedures. The pavilion was designed to withstand Hong Kong's extreme weather conditions and was built without causing any permanent damage to the football ground where it was located.

The Wishing Pavilion is a testament to the potential of sustainable materials in architecture. It demonstrates how design can be used to address global environmental issues, such as the increasing amount of plastic waste. The pavilion's success in this regard was recognized with a Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations.
