Quintela's design philosophy revolves around understanding the essence of a place and allowing it to guide the architectural intervention. He spends considerable time listening to the site, absorbing its energy, and deciphering its unique language. The Azoia's Jewel House is a result of this intimate dialogue between the architect and the land.
The architect's role is that of a spokesperson, translating the site's desires into a physical structure. The challenge was to infuse the intervention with the holistic morphology of the place, creating a home that respects the spirit of the location. Quintela believes that simplicity and authenticity are the keys to creating beautiful architecture, just like the beauty of a human being.
The Azoia's Jewel House stands out with its clean lines, bright interiors, and spacious layout. The simplicity of the materials used highlights the essence of the architecture, allowing the site to shine through. The design seamlessly blends the old ruins with contemporary elements, creating a unique and authentic space.
With an interior area of 264 m2 and a total land area of 233 m2, the Azoia's Jewel House offers a tranquil retreat in the picturesque village of Azóia. Surrounded by mountains and cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this privileged location served as the inspiration for the project. It is a place where land ends and sea begins, symbolizing the potential for peace and harmony.
Quintela's research for this design went beyond the standard assumptions of a site. He delved into the intangible qualities of the place, exploring its myths, legends, and policies. By understanding the history and humanity of the location, he was able to create a design that goes beyond nostalgia and embraces the true essence of the site.
The Azoia's Jewel House is a testament to Quintela's ability to create architecture that is deeply rooted in its context. By appreciating the physical and social context of a place, he avoids imposing architectural forms that are disconnected from their surroundings. Instead, he contributes to the transformation and evolution of the site, creating meaningful and authentic interventions.
Recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity, the Azoia's Jewel House was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, making the world a better place. Quintela's design exemplifies these qualities, showcasing his technical and creative skills in creating a harmonious blend of history and modernity.
