Majlis: A Contemporary Private Club House in Dubai

Merging Old and New in Arabian Hospitality

The Majlis, designed by Ardh Architects, is a unique private club house that beautifully merges the old and the new in Arabian culture. Inspired by the concept of hospitality and the nostalgia of Arabian oases, this contemporary design offers a luxurious and welcoming space for guests.

The word "Majlis" in Arabic refers to a formal living or gathering space, but in Arabian culture, it extends to any building specifically designed for private hospitality. The Majlis is a ground floor L-shaped building that encompasses formal and casual living and dining spaces, two ensuite bedrooms, an office, and a detached service block housing an in-house kitchen. It is a true testament to Arabian hospitality.

One of the standout features of the Majlis is its design realization technology. The building employs a canopy that provides shading to the triple-glazed glass envelope, protecting it from the harsh desert climate. Natural organic materials such as stone cladding and marble interiors are used to create a cooler feel that responds well to the existing climate conditions. The surrounding vegetation acts as a buffer for heat transmittance and provides natural shading with interesting shadows.

The layout of the Majlis is carefully planned to accommodate a large number of guests. Divided into three zones, each with its own service corridor, circulation, and supporting spaces for utilities, the design ensures a seamless flow of movement. The northwest side of the plot offers an open view, allowing guests to enjoy the sunset view of the iconic Burj Khalifa in the distance.

Located in Dubai, the Majlis is still in the design phase. The project presented several challenges, including the unique location on a wetland known as "Sabkha." The design had to embrace the beauty of the natural surroundings while overcoming the technical difficulties posed by the concentrated underground rainwater. Ardh Architects successfully tackled these challenges with innovative structural solutions.

The Majlis has already received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

The Majlis by Ardh Architects is a testament to the rich Arabian culture of hospitality, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary design. It offers a luxurious and welcoming space for guests to experience the best of Arabian hospitality in the heart of Dubai.
