K11 Musea: A Galaxy of Creativity

Revolutionizing Retail with Art, Architecture, and Sustainability

Unveiling K11 Musea, a shopping mall that transcends traditional retail concepts to become a cultural hub. This award-winning design, inspired by the sea and the cosmos, is a testament to the power of creativity and sustainability in architecture.

Located in Victoria Dockside, K11 Musea is not just a shopping mall. It is a celebration of culture, art, and design, aptly named "A Muse by the Sea". The design, inspired by the cosmos and the natural beauty of Hong Kong, features a 35m high atrium, dubbed the Opera Theatre, lined with meticulously positioned lights that create a galaxy of creativity. The Ball feature serves as a focal point, furthering the illusion of looking up into space, while a sprawling sculpture over the escalator echoes the famous buttress roots of Hong Kong's banyan trees.

What sets K11 Musea apart is its unique blend of art, architecture, design, and sustainability. The mall was reinvigorated by 100 creative minds from different disciplines and cultures, making it a Silicon Valley of Culture. The Opera Theatre's galaxy is created by programmable spotlights, each adjusted individually to create a diverse range of lighting intensities. The interior is adorned with handcrafted palettes of rich bronze and rustic paintwork by local artists, reflecting the mall's commitment to supporting local culture and craftsmanship.

Not only is K11 Musea a design marvel, but it also stands as a beacon of sustainability. The project has achieved LEED Gold and BEAM Plus Gold standards, with features such as rainwater harvesting and a seawater-cooled, oil-free heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system to reduce energy consumption. These sustainable practices are seamlessly integrated into the design, further enhancing its appeal.

K11 Musea is the brainchild of Adrian Cheng, founder of K11 Group and Executive Vice-Chairman of New World Development. The design was realized in collaboration with AB Concept, KPF, Laab & Speirs and Major. The project spanned ten years, from 2009 to 2019, and is the final segment of the ambitious US2.6b Victoria Dockside cultural district on a 28-hectare site on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront.

The design faced several challenges, including convincing stakeholders of the new concept of cultural retail and bringing together artists, designers, and architects with different creative visions to form a cohesive and seamless ecosystem. Despite these challenges, K11 Musea stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and creativity, redefining the boundaries of retail design and setting a new standard for future developments.

In recognition of its exceptional design and innovation, K11 Musea was awarded Platinum in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing and make the world a better place. Indeed, K11 Musea is not just a shopping mall, but a cultural hub that inspires and educates, truly living up to its name as a Muse by the Sea.
