Kayoni: A Visionary Modular Construction Set

Revolutionizing Creativity and Learning Through Play

Inspired by what many said could not be done, designer Flemming S. Andersen created Kayoni, a visionary modular system that challenges conventional thinking. This innovative construction set aims to inspire and stimulate creativity, logic, and social interaction in individuals of all ages.

By combining vision, applied technology, and a tight mathematical design concept, Kayoni has bridged the gap between traditional construction sets and limitless possibilities. With its high versatility in construction and assembly, Kayoni allows for vertical, horizontal, and angled assembly simply through its blocks. This unique feature sets it apart from other construction sets on the market, pushing boundaries and encouraging creativity.

Kayoni blocks are made using high-precision injection molding, ensuring accuracy and consistency. Each block is based on a 5 x 5 x 5 mm cube modulo, allowing for multiple orientation assembly. The blocks are made from high-grade ABS in a variety of palette colors. Stringent quality controls and third-party lab testing ensure compliance with safety regulations, guaranteeing the absence of prohibited substances.

The dimensions of Kayoni blocks vary, ranging from 15 x 10 x 5 mm to 60 x 15 x 15 mm. The size and contents of each set depend on the variety and quantity of blocks included. The packaging is optimized for transport, with the smallest package measuring 186 x 143 x 57 mm and the largest measuring 186 x 286 x 114 mm. These packages can be stacked on transport pallets for efficient logistics.

Kayoni blocks come in sets ranging from 100 to 3200 blocks, each accompanied by illustrated assembly instructions. This construction set is designed to stimulate learning, develop selected competencies and skills, and facilitate interaction and the development of social skills. Whether at home, in kindergarten, school, or the office, Kayoni is suitable for children and adults alike.

The Kayoni project was initiated in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the end of 2016. After being exhibited at the KL Children and Youth Congress in Aalborg, Denmark, in January 2019, Kayoni was commercially introduced to the market in October of the same year. The ABS-series of Kayoni is set for market introduction in mid-2020.

The development of Kayoni involved extensive research and testing. The objective was to create a toy series that inspires creativity and learning. Tests were conducted on materials, technologies, and products, including 12 different plastics and 8 high-accuracy tools. Marketing research, focus groups, and user acceptance testing were also carried out to gather insights and feedback from users, engineers, graphic designers, and pedagogues.

Overcoming creative, technical, and research challenges was crucial in the development of Kayoni. The goal was to create a versatile 3D construction set that differed from conventional assembly methods. This was achieved through a tight mathematical design concept, high accuracy requirements for manufacturing tools, and a deep understanding of material properties. Trademark and design patent registrations were also obtained to protect the intellectual property of Kayoni.

Kayoni is a new way of thinking when it comes to modular construction sets. Its tight mathematical design allows for limitless constructional opportunities, thanks to the high accuracy tolerances of its interconnecting pins and pockets. Designed for toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children, Kayoni is not only enjoyable and skill-building but also creatively inspiring, fun, and entertaining for everyone.

Kayoni has been recognized for its outstanding design and innovation. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Quality and Innovation Award in 2020. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
