QMC Hospital: A Modern and Sustainable Day Treatment Centre

ONE20, the design firm behind the QMC Hospital, took a creative approach to maximize sustainability and efficiency. The building was designed around a central atrium, which not only acts as a focal point for all activities but also enhances sustainability by allowing natural light to flood the interior spaces. By reimagining the use of consultation space and collaborating with consultant teams, the designers were able to reduce the building's size by 20% compared to standard NHS criteria.

The Nottingham NHS Day Treatment Centre stands out from other healthcare facilities due to its unique features and strengths. Equipped with the latest technology, the center offers 15 integrated departments, including diagnostics and theater suites, all providing day care facilities and treatment. This innovative design allowed the hospital to free up bed space for longer-term care, making it the largest Independent Sector Treatment Centre in Britain.

The realization of the QMC Hospital involved the use of modern building materials and a focus on sustainability. The circulation areas are celebrated with clear glass, allowing natural light to permeate the building. A metal tube tunnel connects the new building to the old, creating a rhythmic play of light as visitors walk along. Extensive research was conducted to provide additional treatments and reduce waiting times, ensuring that patients receive prompt and efficient care.

The technical specifications of the QMC Hospital are impressive. With a capacity to serve 185,000 patients per annum, the facility spans over 9,500 square meters across two operational floors. The project took six years from inception to opening, including all bidding stages. The collaboration between the NHS and the design team, which included Adrian Light, Roger Walker, Tony Kidman, Rachel Dann, Denise Filbery, Claire Walker, and Jerome Healy, resulted in a successful and efficient healthcare facility.

The QMC Hospital has received recognition for its outstanding design and contribution to the healthcare industry.
