The Iceberg sculptures are a testament to Majuri's innovative approach to design. Each piece is handcrafted in Finland and can be connected to form mountain ranges, creating mental landscapes made of glass. The uniqueness of these sculptures lies in their surface structure, which is given a distinctive texture through the cold mark of glass, akin to a fingerprint.
The production techniques used in creating these sculptures mimic the different states of ice. Majuri uses sandblasting to create dim and frosty surfaces, while the colors of the glass are handmade from metal oxides. The surfaces are also cracked hot by dipping hot glass in cold water. Each iceberg is mouth blown and shaped in four different metal molds, giving them a unique and inimitable character.
The Iceberg sculptures are not just aesthetically pleasing; they also offer an interactive experience. The sculptures can be arranged into landscape-like installations, and the surface of each object is always unique. The multiple surface textures create interesting optical illusions and reflections, and when light gleams through the glass, the shadow looks like water.
The Iceberg series has been exhibited at several prestigious events, including the Venice Glass Week's HUB in 2019, the Scandinavian Pavilion of The Interior Lifestyle Tokyo Japan, and the Designboom Pavilion in Toronto Interior Design Show. The project was a technical challenge for Majuri, who aimed to highlight the "mistakes" of recycled materials in an aesthetic way. This was achieved by hand making the glass colors from metal oxides and using surface techniques that work in erratic ways.
The Iceberg sculptures are a testament to Majuri's commitment to sustainable design and her ability to transform recycled materials into works of art. Each piece is hand-shaped, signed, and numbered in Finland. The main philosophy behind the Iceberg sculptures is to reflect the climate change, making them not just decorative items, but also a powerful statement on the state of our planet.
In recognition of her innovative design, Majuri was awarded Silver in the A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2020. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
