Light and Shadow: A Neo-Classical American Style Residential Design

An Open Concept Space that Embraces Light and Nature

Inspired by the warm and casual American style, Sung Hsing Lee, a renowned designer, has created a stunning residential design that seamlessly blends light, shadow, and nature. With a focus on visual penetration and light flow, this project stands out for its unique use of multiple arch-doors and progressive levels, resulting in a space that follows the natural play of light and shadow.

The design of this two-story residence, spanning approximately 562 square meters, is characterized by its open space concept. The layout configuration, color expression, and styling language of each room are carefully curated to reflect the clients' desire for a warm and casual American style. The site's advantageous features, such as good ventilation, ample natural light, and scenic views, have been maximized by strategically placing windows in every corner, creating a seamless connection between the indoor living area and the surrounding grassland.

One of the key strengths of this design lies in its use of multiple arch-doors, which define the main functions of each area while maintaining a sense of visual continuity. This approach creates a progressive level-like courtyard and layered frames, resulting in a captivating play of light and shadow throughout the space. The design not only allows the space to follow the natural flow of light but also creates a dynamic and engaging atmosphere.

The realization of this design incorporates a combination of materials, including wood veneer, tiles, stone finishes, and wood flooring. These materials not only add visual interest but also contribute to the overall warmth and elegance of the space.

Throughout the residence, the purpose of each space unit is clearly defined through thoughtful plan configurations. However, the boundaries between these spaces are intentionally blurred to encourage interaction and flow. Whether it's the entrance area and the public indoor area, the living room and dining room, or the living room and outdoor green space, the design allows for air and light to flow freely, creating an inviting and harmonious environment for residents and guests.

This exceptional residential design was completed in August 2019 in Taichung City, Taiwan. It is a testament to Sung Hsing Lee's meticulous research and attention to detail. By integrating curved staircases, a high-scale entrance, simple and elegant line board elements, and a fireplace-shaped TV wall, the design achieves a neo-classical American style that is both timeless and inviting.

The Light and Shadow design project has received accolades for its excellence. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes the design's practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements. The design's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world, making it a truly deserving recipient of this honor.
