Lightflakes for StarMicronics

An Artistic Installation that Reconstructs Light

The installation "Lightflakes" by Yuji Okitsu is a unique and innovative art project that combines precision technology with the beauty of light. Designed for the entrance of the headquarters of Star Micronics, a global Japanese company, this installation embodies the company's corporate statement "Miniature Technology, Infinite World" through the use of delicate lens parts.

The "Lightflakes" installation is composed of 53,900 small and thin lenses meticulously assembled to create large optical screens. The lenses, measuring 40 mm in diameter and 0.3 mm thin, are made from PET, a recyclable material that offers excellent light reflection and transparency. Laser cutting techniques were used to precisely process the lenses, resulting in a lightweight installation that sways and enhances the brilliance of light.

By reconstructing light, the "Lightflakes" installation transforms the entrance of Star Micronics' headquarters into a captivating and dynamic space. The installation interacts with the natural light that enters through the glass facade, creating a unique scene and experience for visitors. This fusion of art and technology not only showcases the company's precision components but also reflects its global presence and commitment to innovation.

Yuji Okitsu, the designer behind "Lightflakes," approached this project with a background in architectural thinking. The concept of reconstructing light and the meticulous assembly of lenses allowed for flexibility in adapting the installation to different projects. The artistry and design elements of "Lightflakes" enhance the value of both the artwork and the space it occupies, creating a one-of-a-kind environment.

The "Lightflakes" installation was completed in February 2020 at the headquarters of Star Micronics in Shizuoka, Japan. Since its completion, it has quietly transformed the atmosphere of the entrance, linking with the changing natural light and raising awareness of the environment. This artwork not only serves as a visual spectacle but also reflects the architectural thinking behind its creation, solving design challenges while considering the surrounding environment.

Recognized for its excellence, the "Lightflakes" installation was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges the innovative and practical nature of the design, as well as its ability to meet professional and industrial requirements. The "Lightflakes" installation truly represents the fusion of art, architecture, and technology, creating a captivating and immersive experience for all who encounter it.
