Golestan: A Jewel Reflecting Iranian Architecture

Designer Hengame Mojtahedi Merges Tradition and Innovation in Jewelry Design

Unveiling the Golestan, a unique piece of jewelry that pays homage to traditional Iranian architecture while showcasing the potential of modern design techniques. Crafted by Hengame Mojtahedi, this award-winning design serves as both a ring and a pendant, demonstrating the fusion of form and function.

Derived from the architectural splendor of The Golestan Palace, the Golestan jewelry piece embodies the essence of traditional Iranian houses and palaces. These structures typically feature an inside and an outside, with the former often showcasing the best of Iranian architecture. The Golestan piece mirrors this concept, with its interior boasting a mirror and enameling, both significant elements of traditional Iranian art and architecture. The exterior, on the other hand, incorporates other forms and motifs found in Golestan Palace and features a Neyshabur Turquoise stone.

The Golestan stands out for its dual functionality as a necklace and a ring. Its design incorporates a mirror on the inside and an enameled front, allowing the wearer to choose which side faces outwards. This piece of jewelry was first designed in software, then brought to life using a 3D printer and the casting method. The materials used include silver, enamel, mirror, and turquoise stone.

Technical specifications of the Golestan include a ring width of 19.69 mm, a height of 34.08 mm, a circle diameter of 32.50 mm, and a total weight of 27 grams. The design process involved extensive research into the principles of Iranian architecture and the architecture of Golestan Palace. One of the challenges encountered during the crafting of this piece was fitting the mirror inside due to the weight of the mercury used in the mirror. The solution was to use Plexiglas.

The Golestan project commenced in March 2020 in Tehran, Iran, and concluded in July 2020. The design has been recognized with the Iron A' Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design Award in 2021. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. It is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.

The Golestan piece is a testament to Hengame Mojtahedi's creativity and technical prowess, as well as her deep respect for her cultural heritage. It serves as a shining example of how traditional motifs can be reimagined through contemporary design techniques, creating a unique piece of jewelry that is both a fashion statement and a tribute to Iranian architecture.
