Chiaroscuro, meaning the contrast between light and dark, is a concept that Maya McCormack beautifully captures in her jewelry collection. The links in this collection create a marble effect, combining elements over time through pressure and heat. The result is a series of pieces that come in and out of sight, revealing different aspects at different moments. This dynamic interplay of depth and interpretation is what sets Chiaroscuro apart.
What makes Chiaroscuro truly unique is not only its form but also its process and materials. Maya McCormack seamlessly blends traditional silversmith techniques with technological advances, creating a harmonious intersection of the old and the new. The collection is a result of a back and forth between Computer-Aided Design and organic exploration through the use of 3D printed ABS, natural dye, cast sterling silver, and Swarovski sponsored crystals.
The realization of Chiaroscuro is a testament to Maya McCormack's dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. The design process starts with introspection and sketching, which then transitions into 3D modeling programs. The artist relinquishes control by 3D printing already connected links, a process that involves countless failures before achieving the desired result. The printed pieces are then manipulated through organic processes such as dyeing and beading, enhancing the texture and adding a touch of uniqueness to each piece. The final step involves casting the results in sterling silver and unifying them with the 3D printed/dyed thermoplastic polymer, creating a cohesive connection that reflects the concept itself.
When it comes to wearing Chiaroscuro, the experience is as remarkable as the design itself. The 3D printed links provide beautiful movement and weightlessness, while the sterling silver adds a subtle weight that reminds the wearer of the earrings' presence. The dyeing and beading on the back of the earrings ensure that they look stunning from all angles. Additionally, the use of sterling silver makes the earrings easy to polish, while the 3D prints are simple to wipe clean if necessary.
Maya McCormack's Chiaroscuro collection was created between September 2019 and March 2020. Although the physical exhibition at the Savannah College of Art and Design was canceled due to COVID-19, the collection was showcased virtually. The exceptional design and craftsmanship of Chiaroscuro have not gone unnoticed, as it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
Chiaroscuro is not just a jewelry collection; it is a testament to Maya McCormack's artistic vision and her ability to create pieces that transcend traditional boundaries. With its unique form, innovative materials, and captivating design, Chiaroscuro is a true masterpiece that embodies the essence of art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology.
