Gem Of The World: A Costume Design Inspired by the Cayman Islands

Reba Dilbert's Award-Winning Design Reflects the Pristine Beauty of the Caribbean

Reba Dilbert, a renowned costume designer, has created a masterpiece that encapsulates the essence of the Cayman Islands. The design, titled "Gem Of The World," is a tribute to the pristine beauty of the Caribbean and has won the prestigious Silver A' Performing Arts, Stage, Style and Scenery Design Award in 2021.

The inspiration for this design came from the Cayman Islands, a top tourist destination known for its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and rich marine environment. The costume predominantly features white, symbolizing the purity and natural beauty of these islands. The design's unique properties lie in its color and shape. The white reflects the powdery sand of the Cayman beaches, while the wing-like shape signifies the numerous tourists who flock to this Caribbean gem.

Creating this design was a meticulous process. Dilbert handcrafted the costume using a variety of fabrics, including spandex and lace, and embellished it with sequins and feathers. The foundation of the sculpted piece was framed with metal wire and bonded using a special technique. This painstaking process began in July 2018 and was completed in December 2019 in the Cayman Islands.

Research played a crucial role in the creation of this design. Dilbert spent considerable time observing the Seven Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands, allowing the ocean's view to inspire the design. However, the project was not without its challenges. Sculpting the design with the metal wire was a time-consuming and demanding task that required extensive effort to frame and secure before applying the fabric base.

The design is more than just a costume; it carries a message. The wings are a playful nod to the flights of people who visit the islands to admire their beauty. The white costume with blue reflective accents mirrors the white sand and blue waters, emphasizing the importance of preserving the marine environment. As a small island nation, the Cayman Islands are a plea for the world to take care of the environment, particularly the oceans.

The "Gem Of The World" design has been recognized for its creativity and professional excellence, earning the Silver A' Performing Arts, Stage, Style and Scenery Design Award in 2021. This award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, and induce feelings of amazement and wonder. Reba Dilbert's design certainly fits this description, serving as a testament to her talent and the enchanting allure of the Cayman Islands.
