SporTV, Brazil's largest sports network, embarked on an unprecedented project for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. They built a semi-spherical glass and metal structure at Ilha Fiscal, a historic island in downtown Rio de Janeiro, to serve as a studio for their 24-hour live coverage. The design of the studio was inspired by contemporary architecture masterpieces and aimed to integrate with the city through reflections on the water.
The location of the studio on Ilha Fiscal was strategically chosen for its panoramic 360˚ view of Rio de Janeiro's iconic landmarks, including Christ the Redeemer, the Sugar Loaf, Santos Dumont Airport, and the Rio-Niterói Bridge. The turning base glass studio, with its revolving floor platform, allowed for endless scene framings and provided viewers with a unique perspective of the city.
The design team faced several technical challenges during the realization of the studio. They conducted temperature control, reflections, light, and acoustics tests to ensure optimal conditions for broadcasting. Engineering solutions were implemented to lift the studio one meter up, accommodating cooling systems and the internal stage rotation mechanism.
The result was an 80m2 glass studio that seamlessly blended modern elements with the classic architecture of Ilha Fiscal. The studio's integration with the city through water reflections created a visual illusion of continuity, enhancing the overall viewing experience for SporTV's audience.
The construction of the studio took approximately one month, and it operated nonstop for 36 days during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The studio was dismantled in August 2014, marking the end of a successful project that showcased the intersection of design, technology, and sports broadcasting.
This innovative design by SporTV was recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in the Performing Arts, Stage, Style, and Scenery Design category in 2015. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and excellence in both technical and artistic aspects.
