Xinghui: A Fusion of Japanese and Chinese Aesthetics

Designer Baodong Wang's Unique Approach to Dining Room Design

The design of Xinghui is a departure from traditional Japanese cuisine spaces. Baodong Wang has created a layout reminiscent of Chinese gardens, filled with landscapes that change with the seasons. Each compartment within the dining room offers a different landscape experience, enhancing the communication between diners. The entire space resembles a small village, with each compartment serving as a separate house.

The inspiration for Xinghui came from Chinese landscape painting. Baodong Wang sought to express the spirit space found in ancient literati paintings, described as "the appearance of mountains, entering mountains, looking inside mountains, looking back from the mountaintops and looking out over mountains." This concept was translated into the physical space of the dining room, offering a journey of body perception and spiritual sublimation for diners.

Xinghui was constructed using ancient brick, glass, art paint, and wood, over an area of 1000 square meters. The design process presented challenges, particularly in combining Japanese and Chinese aesthetics and constructing the large sculptures that serve as focal points within the space. Despite these challenges, the design team, which included Feng Jian, mishuxiang, qinqiang, and zhanglin, successfully realized Baodong Wang's vision.

The design was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, strong technical characteristics, and splendid artistic skill. Xinghui certainly fits this description, offering a unique dining experience that leaves a lasting impression on its visitors.

Located on Jinan Cultural West Road in Shandong Province, China, Xinghui opened in December 2019 and was exhibited in Shanghai in May 2020. The design is a testament to Baodong Wang's innovative approach to interior design, blending different cultural aesthetics to create a unique and memorable dining experience.
