Lan Ya Bai Yun: A Unique Limited Edition Book on Blue Calico Technique

Preserving Chinese Craftsmanship and History

These researches and restorations are based on the collection and research results of 40 years, and the integration of Chinese craftsmanship printing and dyeing patterns. The idea behind the "Lan Ya Bai Yun" series is to record, research and restore all the books on the blue calico technique in one book. Our mission is to create a book with a unique, natural and historical sense to support the inherited concepts and stories.

This book, named "Lan Ya Bai Yun," is a masterpiece by Wu Yuanxin, a master craftsman and the national heir to blue calico. It took him five years to travel through 21 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions, collecting over 40 years of research and collection results. The book showcases the integration of printing and dyeing patterns from heavyweight Chinese handicrafts, documenting and restoring the blue calico technique. The vivid pictures and detailed text within the book fully demonstrate the mystery and charm of Chinese blue dye.

In order to provide readers with an immersive experience, each book includes a double volume design on the inner pages, with a piece of handmade blue printed cloth mounted inside. The cloth is unique to each book, featuring different patterns that seamlessly integrate with the content. The use of burlap for the cover design further connects the book to the blue calico tradition, symbolizing the wisdom of ancient ancestors. The manual opening of the spine adds a natural touch, while the handmade blue calico inside enhances the book's ancient and elegant feel. With its cultural heritage and collection value, "Lan Ya Bai Yun" is a true masterpiece.

The dimensions of the book are 210 mm x 50 mm x 290mm, providing a substantial and visually appealing reading experience. The design team, led by Sun Jian, meticulously crafted every aspect of the book to ensure its authenticity and aesthetic appeal.

Released in May 2019 in Beijing, China, "Lan Ya Bai Yun" is the result of extensive research and dedication. Wu Yuanxin's passion for blue calico and his commitment to preserving this traditional craft shines through in every page of the book. It serves as a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of blue calico in Chinese society.

The design of "Lan Ya Bai Yun" presented several challenges. The team aimed to create a book that not only stood out among other blue calico books but also conveyed the story of Wu Yuanxin and his descendants in a simple and accessible manner. The goal was to continue the non-heritage context and revitalize it in contemporary society, while also ensuring the book's relevance and appeal.

With its magnetic hardcover gift box, depressed and blue-colored cover, double volumes, and naked ridge lock blue thread, "Lan Ya Bai Yun" exudes classic elegance. It is a book that demands attention, dedicated to cleanliness and preservation. Opening this Chinese blue dye "collection of classics" allows readers to unfold the 800-year charm of printing and dyeing craftsmanship.
