Revamping Tradition: Tienyu Wu's Innovative House Design

Blending Functionality and Aesthetics in a Taiwanese Residential Renovation

Located in a traditional Taiwanese residential area, the house faced the common challenge of limited natural light due to the close proximity of neighboring buildings. To address this, Wu designed a unique façade featuring QR-code openings filled with glass bricks. This innovative solution not only enhances the building's security but also allows ample sunlight to permeate the interior.

The house, originally built 40 years ago, was redesigned with a keen understanding of the owner's daily routine. Wu focused on three main aspects - maximizing daylight, using natural materials, and creating a smooth traffic flow. The result is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, where every element serves a purpose and contributes to the overall aesthetic.

Wu's choice of materials further emphasizes the fusion of tradition and innovation. Japanese cypress, solid wood, and bamboo carbon paint (formaldehyde-free) were used, along with modern elements like coating magnetic glass and LVT waterproof flooring. The house spans 195 square meters, with each space meticulously designed to optimize functionality and comfort.

The design process, guided by the architectural method known as Building Information Modeling (BIM), was not without its challenges. The need for ample storage space and functional areas for the family required creative solutions. However, Wu's expertise and innovative approach resulted in a design that not only met but exceeded the owner's expectations.

The project, which began in August 2018 in Kaohsiung city, was completed in October 2020. It has since been recognized with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021, a testament to Wu's exceptional design skills and innovative approach.
