Designing a Spoon to Change the City

A Book by Claudio Larcher

Based on an idea by Claudio Larcher, "Designing a Spoon to Change the City" is a thought-provoking book that explores the role of designers in shaping the future. It was inspired by a journey undertaken by a group of Italian designers to the Taramelli lodge in the Dolomites, where they contemplated contemporary design challenges, new scenarios, and changes in models, markets, and scales.

The book, authored by Claudio Larcher and Valentina Dalla Costa, with contributions from Andrea Branzi and Italo Rota, offers a dialogue on the collective self-isolation experienced during the COVID-19 lockdown. It reflects on the social, cultural, and economic changes that await designers, urging them to lay the foundations for a new era of creativity.

"Designing a Spoon to Change the City" delves into the realm of contemporary design, exploring the transition from the real city to the digital one. It examines the value of data and its surpassing significance compared to physical objects, aiming to define the essence of contemporary design in today's world.

The book, published in 2020 by Quodlibet and NABA Insights, spans 144 pages and measures 140 x 220 mm. It presents a collection of reflections and research ideas from NABA designers and teachers, including Lorenzo De Rosa, Francesco Fusillo, Ernesto Iadevaia, Eugenia Morpurgo, Marcello Pirovano, Filippo Protasoni, and Sara Ricciardi.

Through a narrative dialogue format, "Designing a Spoon to Change the City" captures the diverse perspectives and opposing viewpoints of the designers involved. It provides a snapshot of the current design landscape, showcasing the thoughts and insights of NABA designers and teachers on the future role of designers and their ability to shape tomorrow's world.

This thought-provoking book received the Iron A' Design Award in 2021 in the category of Education, Teaching Aid, and Training Content Design. The award recognizes its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach, meeting professional and industrial requirements. It is esteemed for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world and evoking fulfillment and positive emotions.
