Yamadera: A Serene Mountain Temple-Inspired Hotel Suite in Taiwan

Unveiling the Tranquility of Nature

The Yamadera suite, located in the heart of Hotel Yamagata Kaku in Jiaoxi, Taiwan, is a testament to the hotel's philosophy of delivering a transformative experience. The suite's name, Yamadera, meaning "Mountain Temple" in Japanese, reflects the deep connection to nature and spirituality that this space embodies.

Chris Chen, the visionary behind this design, aimed to create an environment that encapsulates the essence of a mountain temple. The suite is divided into three sections - Foyer, Resting, and Bathing - each meticulously designed to provide a sense of enclosure and tranquility.

One of the standout features of the Yamadera suite is its use of arch elements, which elegantly divide the space and create a harmonious flow. The compact spatial organization not only maximizes the limited area of the suite but also enhances the sense of intimacy and solitude that guests seek.

The design team employed a low chromatic tone throughout the suite, evoking a feeling of solitude and introspection. The carefully selected materials, including wall coatings infused with diatomaceous earth and water-proof mineral paints, create a nature-like ambiance and earthy tones.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Yamadera suite is the abstract shrine-like space that connects the foyer and bedding area. This concave space serves as a sacred sanctuary, inviting guests to reflect and find solace within themselves.

The design of the Yamadera suite is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and the seamless integration of Japanese historical and geographic influences. For example, the headboard features an abstract representation of the pilgrimage path to the Mountain Temple in Yamagata. Guests can virtually ascend the steps by flipping through the folding fabric steps on the headboard, symbolizing their journey to the sacred temple.

Despite the size limitations of the suite, which spans 30 square meters, the design successfully creates an isolated hot spring area that immerses guests in a wide-open natural setting. The Yamadera suite not only purifies the mind but also provides a physical and psychological sanctuary for guests.

The Yamadera suite project commenced in April 2017 and was completed in February 2019 in Jiaoxi, Taiwan. The design team, led by Chris Chen, worked closely with the client, Ben Liao, to bring this vision to life.

This exceptional design has garnered recognition and acclaim, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.
