Biroi: A Phoenix-Inspired 3D Printed Jewelry Collection

Designed by Miyu Nakashima, Biroi is a testament to resilience and rebirth

With an inspiration drawn from the legendary Phoenix, Biroi, a 3D printed jewelry collection, is a symbol of resilience and rebirth. The collection, designed by Miyu Nakashima, is a reflection of the courage and passion that fuels individuals to overcome challenges and keep moving forward.

Miyu Nakashima, an architectural designer, has brought a unique perspective to the design of Biroi. The collection features dynamic lines and a Voronoi pattern that symbolizes the Phoenix's revival from the flames. The pattern's size changes to flow over the surface, lending a sense of dynamism to the structure. The collection includes a necklace, earrings, a bracelet, and a ring, each piece embodying the spirit of the Phoenix.

The Biroi collection is not just a piece of jewelry but a wearable art that enhances the wearer's uniqueness. The subtle yet powerful lines passing through the surface are visible by the reflection of light, and delicate patterns reveal themselves when viewed closer. Depending on the material, the expression of the work changes, and the wearer can enjoy the elegant layers and textures established by the 3D printing.

The Biroi collection was started in June 2017 in Kyiv and completed in September 2019 in Tallinn. The design process involved extensive research and experimentation to create a parametric, organic pattern that fits all products. Nakashima used the Grasshopper plugin for Rhino3d as the main 3D parametric design software. The challenge was to move the elegance from the macro dimension of architecture to the micrometric precision of 3D printing.

Biroi is Nakashima's first venture into micro-scale jewelry. Despite the challenges, Nakashima successfully translated the elegance of macro-scale architecture to the precision of 3D printed jewelry. The Biroi collection is a testament to Nakashima's endless passion, mirroring the philosophy of the Phoenix rising from the ashes.

The Biroi collection has been recognized for its creativity and innovation, winning the Silver A' Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design Award in 2021. The award is given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise, innovation, and a remarkable level of excellence. Biroi, with its unique design and profound symbolism, certainly fits the bill.
