Rx1: A Stylish and Functional IOT Controller for Enhanced Security

Unleashing the Power of Design in Access Control

The Rx1 IOT Controller, designed by Travis Baldwin, is a game-changer in the world of access control systems. With its tasteful design and exceptional functionality, Rx1 stands out from the competition while seamlessly integrating into any environment. This highly functional product is a testament to the power of design in enhancing security and convenience.

Aesthetics play a crucial role in setting Rx1 apart from other products in its category. While many security controllers are often hidden away in electronic closets, Rx1 breaks the mold by combining functionality with a visually appealing design. Its rounded form and strategically placed vents draw inspiration from consumer routers and external hard drives, creating a sleek and modern look that complements any space.

One of the standout features of Rx1 is its brand building design elements. The prominently displayed brand graphics, such as the red circle motif, not only add a touch of sophistication but also establish a cohesive design language that can be extended to other products. This attention to detail ensures that Rx1 not only performs its intended function but also serves as a brand ambassador.

Functionality is at the core of Rx1's design. The innovative atrium cooling strategy optimizes the device's performance when wall-mounted, ensuring efficient convection and preventing overheating. The elimination of light pipes through an ingenious LED mount strategy not only saves costs but also enhances the overall aesthetics of the product. Additionally, the graphics on Rx1 allow for easy identification of any circuit issues, simplifying troubleshooting and maintenance.

The ease of use is another key aspect of Rx1's design. The graphics on the device clearly indicate which plug has issues, enabling quick and hassle-free diagnostics. The DIN mount installation system ensures easy and secure attachment to a variety of surfaces, while the wiring process is simplified with the use of phoenix plugs. These user-centric design choices make Rx1 a user-friendly and accessible solution for access control.

The realization of Rx1 involved a combination of custom-built electronics and plastics, as well as off-the-shelf parts. The design process started with the selection of the best form in terms of setup, mounting, servicing, and information architecture. The PCB layout architecture was then developed to align with the chosen form, exemplifying a design-led engineering approach.

With dimensions of 8.0 x 4.5 x 1.75 inches (203.5 x 114.8 x 44.5 mm), Rx1 is compact yet powerful. Made from flame-resistant plastic and optimized for UL safety standards, it controls two doors and two access devices, with additional connectivity options through Ethernet RJ45. The system status is indicated by LEDs for each plug, providing users with instant visual feedback. Furthermore, hidden reset buttons and tamper sensors ensure unauthorized access is promptly detected.

The Rx1 project, led by Travis Baldwin, began in November 2020 and was completed in March 2021. The design process took place in both Bristol, UK, and Santa Ana, California, showcasing the collaborative effort behind this innovative product. Currently in manufacturing, Rx1 is set to be released in Spring 2021, revolutionizing the field of access control.

The Rx1 design is the result of extensive research and development. Usability research, conducted with input from clients, installers, and forums, ensured that the design prioritized a seamless user experience. Competitive audits and style references guided the aesthetic choices, resulting in a design that balances performance and visual appeal. The distinctive red color and vent area as a brand feature were among the key learnings from the research phase.

Overcoming design challenges was an integral part of the Rx1 project. Creating an appropriate design for the context of electronic closets, where the device is typically hidden, required careful consideration. The design team successfully navigated cooling requirements, access to DIN mounts, and fitting text on the top surface, resulting in a product that seamlessly integrates into its environment while delivering exceptional performance.

The Rx1 IOT Controller, with its unique blend of style and functionality, has already garnered recognition in the design community. It was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2021, a testament to its well-designed, practical, and innovative nature. This accolade acknowledges Rx1's ability to meet professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better and more secure world.
