Yunji Lee, a visionary in the fashion industry, has created a groundbreaking womenswear collection, "Flatter Your Body". This collection challenges the traditional concept of corsets, offering a comfortable and adjustable alternative that celebrates all body types.
Lee's inspiration for this collection stems from the inherent human desire to attract and impress. Throughout history, fashion has been a tool for this, often employing methods that alter or accentuate the human body shape. However, these methods frequently result in physical discomfort. Lee's collection offers a solution to this problem, reimagining the historically discomforting corset in a way that embraces all body types.
The unique properties of this collection lie in its innovative use of lacing straps. Each look features multiple straps placed around the bust, waist, and hips, allowing the wearer to adjust the garment to their body shape. This not only flatters the body but also provides a level of comfort not typically associated with corsets.
The collection was realized using light wool, cotton, and wool crepe, ideal for the Spring/Summer season. The garments' fabric placement resembles the X-ray of a human body, with light and dark blue fabrics layered and patched together. The use of optical illusion, stripe print, and pleats further enhances the flattering effect of the garments.
The collection comprises six looks, available in sizes 0-6. The looks can be transformed by adjusting the straps on the body, offering a level of customization that allows the wearer to create their desired silhouette. The project was developed from November 2019 to August 2020 in Atlanta, USA.
Lee's collection aims to transform fashion into a non-stereotypical medium, challenging the "beauty standard" often portrayed by social media. The main challenge was creating a silhouette that resembles a corset but provides comfort. The fabric selection played a crucial role in achieving this.
Lee's "Flatter Your Body" collection was awarded Silver in A' Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence.
