Wagyu Let’s Shabu: A Fusion of Traditional and Modern Japanese Design

Combining Historical and Contemporary Elements to Create a Unique Dining Experience

Inspired by traditional Japanese techniques and cultural symbols, the Wagyu Let’s Shabu restaurant in Tainan seamlessly blends historical and contemporary elements to create a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Designed by Hao Ching Shen of FK Create Space Design Decoration Company, this project showcases the fusion of old and new, resulting in a space that sparks imagination and offers a lively Japanese atmosphere.

The design of Wagyu Let’s Shabu is characterized by its use of traditional Japanese techniques and modern Japanese presentation. The space is divided into different areas using wooden grilles and white square lights, which are complemented by a Japanese fan pattern. This combination not only connects the various spaces within the restaurant but also creates a visual harmony that reflects the brand's Japanese identity.

One of the key areas in the restaurant is the self-service bar, where traditional Japanese wooden structures and new Japanese-style lights take center stage. The brand's Japanese symbol is prominently displayed in this area, further emphasizing the fusion of traditional and modern elements. The core spirits of the brand are represented by a squad of Japanese warriors, each symbolizing a type of food. These brand image characters are brought to life through the clever use of lighting, creating a captivating visual experience.

The attention to detail in the design extends to the smaller spaces within the restaurant. Large-scale fan-shaped iron pieces and ocean wave decorations adorn these areas, adding a touch of whimsy and creating scenes that contribute to the overall rhythm and imagination of a story. The result is a space that not only provides a unique dining experience but also transports guests to a different world.

The design team faced several challenges during the creation of Wagyu Let’s Shabu. To ensure the space stood out, they strategically used Japanese-style white square lights to connect the arcade, entrance, and front desk counter area. The brand image, a large lantern, was inspired by Japanese grille and lantern designs, combining transformed lines and shapes to create a visually striking impression. Additionally, the team aimed to create a lively Japanese atmosphere throughout the restaurant by connecting the waiting area and guest seating area with the white square lights.

The Wagyu Let’s Shabu project began in December 2020 and was completed in March 2021 in Tainan. The design team's research focused on incorporating traditional Japanese techniques and cultural symbols into the space. By fusing historical and contemporary elements, they were able to create a dining experience that is both visually captivating and culturally rich.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. The award acknowledges the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness demonstrated in the design, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life. Wagyu Let’s Shabu is a testament to the power of design to create unique and immersive experiences that leave a lasting impression.
