Clatoz: A Unique Illustration Design by Yoonje Yang

Expressing Emotions Through Patterns and Colors

At first, Yoonje Yang drew poses and pictures of people's various feelings. This eventually led to the creation of Clatoz, a modern illustration design that captures the essence of contemporary Korean society and its people. The design reflects the gloomy image of society, using patterns to express the emotions and influences that shape individuals.

Clatoz stands out from other illustrations due to its focus on portraying the emotions of different individuals through patterns. Yang incorporates external and internal influences, such as human relationships, music, and movies, to create a unique representation of various emotions. The materials that affect sensibility are interpreted in Yang's own artistic style, resulting in a captivating and thought-provoking design.

The realization of Clatoz involves the use of mixed media, combining different artistic techniques to bring the illustration to life. The design comes in two sizes, 24x17cm and 29.7x21cm, allowing for flexibility in displaying and appreciating the artwork.

Exhibited in Seoul Galleries from 2015 to 2020, Clatoz serves as a tool for conversation. The paintings spark discussions and invite viewers to explore the complex emotions depicted in the patterns. Each artwork in the series offers a glimpse into the inner world of individuals who may not always express themselves verbally.

Throughout the creation process, Yang conducted extensive research on various psychologies and color psychology. The choice of colors, such as passionate red and calming blue, evokes different emotional responses in viewers. Clatoz demonstrates that people can experience different emotions even when faced with the same circumstances, highlighting the complexity of human emotions.

One of the creative challenges Yang faced was finding a balance between subjective and expressive factors in the design. Recognizing that each person has unique life experiences and backgrounds, Yang aimed to create a design that could resonate with individuals on a personal level. By intentionally drawing emotions in a vague manner, Clatoz allows viewers to interpret and connect with the artwork based on their own experiences.

Clatoz, created by Yoonje Yang, is a captivating illustration design that explores the intricacies of human emotions. Through the use of patterns and colors, Yang successfully captures the essence of various feelings, inviting viewers to delve into their own emotional landscapes. This unique design has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in 2021, highlighting its innovative and practical approach to visual communication.
