The inspiration for this design came from the rich cultural heritage of Hiroshima. The logo for the in-house space for communication, known as the Hiroshima Terrace, features a shape reminiscent of the torii gate of Miyajima. This unique design element emphasizes the distinctiveness of Hiroshima and its connection to Japanese tradition.
Central to the design is the use of the carp shape, a symbol deeply rooted in Hiroshima's identity. Known as the "city of water," Hiroshima has long been associated with carp, earning it the nickname "the city of carp." By incorporating the image of Nishikigoi, a brocade carp, adorned with the iconic Mitsubishi colors of red, black, and white, the design beautifully represents both Hiroshima and Mitsubishi.
The Hiroshima Terrace design showcases a remarkable blend of tradition and innovation. The poster, measuring 728mmx1030mm, is offset printed with process colors and gold grid lines, creating a visually striking piece of artwork. Additionally, the carp-shaped in-house sign is made of magnets, allowing for flexible placement in various locations.
Throughout the design process, Shinji Arashigawa collaborated with Ryoutarou Kouduma, an interior designer, to create a cohesive and harmonious space. The goal was to unite the feelings of the Mitsubishi Corporation and its group companies, fostering effective communication and collaboration.
The Hiroshima Terrace design project commenced in October 2019 and was completed in December 2019. However, the creation of poster variations continues, ensuring a dynamic and evolving visual identity for the Mitsubishi Corporation Hiroshima branch.
This exceptional design has garnered recognition and acclaim, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2021. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and ingenuity, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The Hiroshima Terrace design stands as a testament to the power of design to enhance quality of life and make a positive impact on the world.
