Passing of Time: A Retirement House Designed for Tolerance and Uniqueness

An Extraordinary Space Crafted by Shun Yuan Chang

The "Passing of Time" design by Shun Yuan Chang is a residential project that embraces the landscape, flowing lines, and rare stone skin material to create a space that fully expresses tolerance and uniqueness. With careful consideration of color combinations, materials, and serene feelings, this design showcases the owner's extraordinary style.

In terms of function, the main concept of the "Retirement House" design is to integrate the owner's user experience. The space features lower disposed switches to accommodate wheelchair height and accessibility. The public and private areas are planned under the barrier-free principle, with curved shapes replacing sharp corners. This thoughtful approach extends beyond visual aesthetics, demonstrating a deep consideration for the details of daily life.

The realization of the design involves a combination of perspective views, flowing lines, and simple rock materials. Polished marbles serve as the base of the space, while black lines on the ceiling decorate beams and columns, extending towards the picturesque views outside the windows. This design technique outlines the extraordinary tolerance of the house owner. Additionally, the TV wall in the master bedroom is designed to be raised and lowered, allowing unobstructed views outside the window while retaining functionality.

The "Passing of Time" design spans 400 square meters, providing ample space for the retirement house. Located in the heart of Taipei City, the design takes into account the barrier-free needs of the owner, ensuring a welcoming environment for friends and visitors. The goal is to create a space that encourages interaction and fosters a sense of community in a barrier-free setting.

The design project commenced in December 2019 in Taipei, with the engineering phase starting in April 2020 and concluding in October 2020. Extensive research on barrier-free spaces guided the design process, resulting in a space that prioritizes accessibility and comfort. By understanding the present and future habits of the occupants and constantly communicating their needs, the design team created a living pattern that promotes independence and ease of use.

Overcoming the challenges of designing barrier-free spaces required a holistic approach. Unlike many projects that limit barrier-free planning to specific areas, the "Passing of Time" design integrates accessibility throughout the entire space. From the size of the entrance door to the position of switches and the height of appliances, every element is carefully considered to ensure a seamless and comfortable experience for individuals with physical disabilities.

The "Passing of Time" design exudes luxury and calmness while maintaining practicality. The fusion of rigid stone veneer, calm wood veneer, and soft leather creates a textured and sophisticated space. The color tones, rounded corners, and smooth proportions contribute to the overall luxurious ambiance, seamlessly integrating barrier-free functions.

This exceptional design by Shun Yuan Chang has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2022. This award is a testament to the design's well-crafted, practical, and innovative nature, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The "Passing of Time" design stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
