Cala di Seta: Innovative Wine Labels Inspired by the Sea

Refreshing and Captivating Designs for a Young and Quality-Seeking Audience

The Cala di Seta wine labels, designed by Giovanni Murgia, capture the essence of the sea and the rich history of Sardinia. With their colorful, minimal, and refined appearance, these labels aim to appeal to a disengaged target audience while offering high-quality products.

The inspiration for the Cala di Seta wine labels comes from the sea, sand, and wind that dominate the territory of Sardinia. The designer drew inspiration from the island's history, which was populated centuries ago by sea people who settled in this corner of Sardinia. These people drew their fortune from the sea and nurtured vineyards of Carignano grapes on the sandy shores. One of the symbols of these places, the Mangiabarche lighthouse, became the focal point of the label design.

What sets the Cala di Seta wine labels apart is their youthful and vibrant appeal. They are designed to be easily interpreted by a target audience that seeks quality products. The labels feature a colorful and minimal design, with the lighthouse design created using simple graphics. The labels are further enhanced with colored metal foils and a three-dimensional effect of Braille relief, simulating the ripple of the waves.

The printing process for the labels was carefully chosen to create a brilliant effect reminiscent of the sun on the sea. Pearl paper, colored according to the type of wine, was used to achieve this effect. Foils of different shades were also employed to create a three-dimensional game that evokes the movement of the sea.

The Cala di Seta wine labels come in a standard size of 80 x 136mm and are printed on FASSON Frozen Quartz Pearl paper. The lighthouse design is created using hot foil with three color variations, and the Braille relief adds a tactile element to the labels.

The project aimed to create a sense of freshness, dynamism, and happiness for the viewer. The colors, textures, names, and paper texture were all carefully chosen to create a captivating and immediate object. The Cala di Seta wine labels are designed to appeal to a young audience that seeks quality and unique experiences.

The design project for Cala di Seta started in February 2021 in Sassari, Italy, and was completed in April 2021. Extensive research was conducted to understand the history and identity of the territory, which influenced the names and graphic elements of the labels. The goal was to rejuvenate the image of the winery while maintaining a connection to its roots.

The Cala di Seta wine labels have received recognition for their outstanding design. They were awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2022. This award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements.
