Longwan Three Realms: A Soothing Space of Infinite Possibilities

Alan Wong and Yi Leung's Award-Winning Design for a Sales Center

The Longwan Three Realms project is named after a poem by Wang Guowei, which speaks about the three levels of cultivation necessary to achieve great careers or become a scholar. Located in a city rich in educational resources, the project targets middle-class families with strong educational needs.

What sets this design apart is its focus on conveying positive and soothing emotional power. The designers have used abstract vocabulary such as closeness, determination, tranquility, elegance, extension, upward, and enlightening as their design keywords. They have carefully selected materials and textures that awaken the rich experience of perception, touch, smell, and other senses.

The design process involved the harmonious layering and echoing of different materials to guide the slow release, rise, and circulation of emotions. A notable feature is the crushed stone mosaic floor, a representative of the reuse of stone waste, which provides a different experience from the cold feeling of standard marble or ceramic tiles.

The design also features a heavy wooden volume that functions as a wall while maintaining sufficient permeability. This not only retains the original building frame and reduces additional items but also brings a new plasticity to the efficiency and temperament of the functional space.

The designers faced challenges in using the new material "pulp," which, while environmentally friendly, recyclable, and plastic, also brought unpredictable variables. However, they successfully overcame these challenges to create a unique and engaging space.
