Popsitable: A Cool and Sustainable Design

Transforming Childhood Memories into Functional Art

Inspired by the nostalgic joy of enjoying a popsicle on a hot summer day, the Popsitable is a unique and sustainable design that combines form and function. Created by designers Daniel Huang, Eric Chang, and Johnny Hu, this innovative table captures the essence of childhood memories while promoting eco-friendly practices.

The Popsitable stands out with its clever use of popsicle bamboo sticks, a small object that holds deep memories for both adults and children. The designers have transformed these sticks into a simple and elegant design, creating a golden ratio exclusive to the Popsitable. Crafted from carbonized bamboo wood, every detail of this table is the result of the constant interplay between imagination and reality.

But what exactly is carbonized bamboo wood? It is a material that combines the traditional charm of bamboo with the advancements of high-tech material studies. The raw bamboo is crushed into threads and then subjected to a process of carbonization under high temperature and pressure. This process enhances the wood's resistance to rot and pests. After soaking in green adhesive and undergoing hot pressing, the result is the beautiful carbonized bamboo wood used in the Popsitable.

With its crushed bamboo texture visible on the surface and high-density texture noticeable on the section, the Popsitable showcases the unique characteristics of carbonized bamboo wood. The material has been tested and certified by SGS, confirming its density above 1.00 and formaldehyde content within 0.05%. Additionally, the Popsitable holds FSC certification for sustainable production, ensuring that it meets the highest environmental standards.

The Popsitable's dimensions of 2100mm width, 900mm depth, and 720mm height make it a versatile and functional piece of furniture. Its legs, resembling oversized popsicle sticks, add a playful touch to the design. The N-shaped support structure and articulated structure design under the tabletop ensure stability and durability, making the Popsitable a solid addition to any space.

Designed and developed in Taiwan, the Popsitable project began in March 2020. The team faced challenges in shaping the hard carbonized bamboo wood, with many furniture factories initially hesitant to take on the task. However, their persistence paid off, and the result is truly remarkable.

By incorporating carbonized bamboo wood, the Popsitable promotes sustainable practices and reduces the need for deforestation. Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant in the world, capable of growing up to 100cm a day. It can be harvested in just five years and does not require replanting. Furthermore, bamboo is 100% biodegradable and has the ability to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making it a low-carbon alternative to other materials like timber, cement, and steel.

The Popsitable has garnered recognition for its innovative design and commitment to sustainability. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and a dedication to improving quality of life.

The Popsitable is not just a table; it is a symbol of childhood nostalgia, sustainable design, and the power of creativity. With its unique blend of form and function, this innovative piece of furniture adds a touch of whimsy and sustainability to any space.
